Installation Instructions For Mazda Miata Window

1. Cut the old plastic window out of car. This can be done with the window up or down. Cut as close to the top as possible. Make this a clean cut, because the new window is glued (later) to the inside, and this cut will be visible.

2. Using the old window as a guide, cut the new plastic window. Remember to cut the new window larger than the old window. The new window should have a 1” overlap onto the top in all directions. This means that the window will be 2” bigger than the original window in the horizontal and vertical dimensions.

3. Sand the gluing surface of the window and the top. This is to ensure a good glue bond. Do not sand any part of the window that you will look through. You should only be sanding the 1” mating surface of the window and the corresponding area of your convertible top. The sanding scratches are what the glue will bond to.

4. The top will look better if this repair is done where it is warm. The plastic expands and contracts in the heat, and the repair will look better if the window is installed warm. Because of this, I would recommend that you apply light heat to the window. This can be done by leaving the window by a heater or carefully using a hair dryer. This is not a requirement, but a suggestion.

5. Place your flat glueing surface in the car.

6. Place plastic wrap onto the flat gluing surface that is placed inside the car. You will need a flat surface to glue on. The plastic wrap prevents any glue from bonding onto the glueing surface. Then put the new plastic window onto the flat surface with the sanded edges up.

7. Mix the glue in the ratio printed on the glue bottles. You can estimate this. Do not mix all the glue now. Extra glue has been provided to seal any leaks that may arise later.

8. Place the glue onto the sanded areas of the window. Strive for full coverage, but don’t overdo it. The convertible top should absorb some of the glue.

9. Now place the rear window section of the convertible top onto the new window. Try to keep the window lying as flat as possible. Match up the gluing surfaces. Place more plastic wrap onto the top of the gluing surfaces on the convertible top. Place the provided cardboard strips onto the glue sections. Feel free to break the strips into smaller strips for the rounded corners. Then add weights to the top of the cardboard strips. Thick books are a good source of weights.

10. Let the glue dry overnight. Remove all weights and clean up.

11. The next morning, look to see if there are any areas that aren’t bonded. Mix more glue to fill any unbonded areas. Keep in mind that glue will take at least 4 hours to fully harden.

12. When putting the top down, assist the window to fold evenly, and not wrinkled.

13. Save the remaining glue for any future separations.
